Are you living the good life?
People are looking for that thing, person or perhaps status in life that will finally make them feel that they have actually lived, or that their lives counted for something really significant. They are spending much time, considerable, and precious resources to take hold of the “good life”.
The Good Life. What the world normally perceives as the “good life” are these status indicators – having a very attractive partner, having the latest techie gadgets, and having titled ownership to houses, automobiles, thriving businesses, membership in exclusive clubs and other valuable assets and possessions. That is the world’s common and standard of a good life. Others go on to include that of having a good job, being part of a multi-million business operation, and even having and building a beautiful and happy family. That notion indeed can include the most trivial to the most serious or significant factors we can think of.
We always hear people say, “If only I could have this ( a car, a job, a boyfriend/girlfriend, a business, a child, a family, etc),I will be happy. Life will be good.” When we read the Bible however, we learn that in life, this is actually not the case. Most of us know that money cannot buy happiness. In fact, things and people can never really bring true and lasting happiness or fulfilment into our lives. So, the question is -“Is there really something that can fill that emptiness or one thing that can satisfy that itch in every person’s heart? Because if there is, that particular thing is that “good thing” that people have been helplessly trying to get and take hold of since time immemorial.
No such thing as a good life?
The Good Lord. The truth is no one can live the “good life” for no one is good. The Apostle Paul wrote in Romans 3:10-12 that
there is no one righteous, not even one; there is no one who understands, no one who seeks God. All have turned away, they have together become worthless; there is no one who does good.
But the Lord is good! King David, thousands or years ago, have already discovered the answer to this age-old question. He declared in Psalm 16:2,
“You are my Lord…apart from You I have no good thing.”
That “something” is none other than the Lord our God Himself! Thus, the Lord our God is our good life! Indeed, the gospel that the Lord Jesus Christ brought to us more than two thousand years ago is the good news. For it brought us the One and Only good thing that sinful mankind ever need -Jesus. Jesus is our Saviour. He reconciled us to the Father by giving His life and shedding His blood for the forgiveness of our sins.
If you have the time, I encourage you to reflect on the prayer of King David in Psalm 16. When we do so, we will find out for ourselves what King David himself found out – the Lord Jesus, our Messiah is our one and only good thing.
Christians, you have access to that good life!
